Napoleon bars, apple fritters, red velvet doughnuts, bear claws, maple bars and champagne cake slices with cherry on top…I want to get to the heart of the matter as quick as possible.
Buttercream Bakery + Diner has been around since practically the beginning of time– and the great news is, it looks/ feels/ smells that way. The service might be some of the worst in the valley; but their ambiance is second-to-none, and the visual stimulation is off the charts. Expect to be treated badly; Expect to smell like grease for days; Expect to be charmed.

I am CRAZY about the counter situation at the Buttercream and the fact that they serve coffee + doughnuts….And chicken fried steak, served with biscuits and lots of whipped butter. Who else in this culinary mecca serves whipped butter with pride?! Let me temp you with more: Their breakfast menus include such gout inducing extravaganzas like: malt waffles + sausage links + hash browns. And then there is my personal favorite, the cinnamon/sugar toast. All served by ladies with hair-dos/ long painted nails/ wearing white aprons.

The bakery is not much different..The pastries, cakes, cookies + petit fours are made from vintage recipes through and through, and are heavy handed with colored sprinkles. Their birthday cakes are the kind that have that have that rare, thick, sugary, gritty frosting… The kind of cake your mama bought for you at the local grocery store– that would MAKE, rather than break a grade school birthday.

The Buttercream is a serious favorite, that will delight the bon vivant, the foodie, the bohemian– and maybe not the high roller.

On my recent visit to Napa, I kept driving by this fabulous pink and white stripped building and thinking to myself “I need to go there”. Finally, as I was passing by yet again, I made a U – turn and pulled into the parking lot. Literally time has stood still in this wonderful bakery/diner. My mom and I bought one to many boxes of donuts and pastry’s while my son sat in a chair plugging his nose. When I asked him why he was plugging his nose he replied “it smells in here”. He was literally overwhelmed by the sweet sugary smells of an old school bakery – something he has never experienced.
Now, whenever I am in Napa, the ButterCream Bakery is my first stop.
The pink stripes of ButterCream Bakery just gave me amazing flashbacks of summers spent in Napa as a child. The glass case filled with so many delights; donuts, pies, eclairs and fluffy frosted cakes. Thank you for a wonderful walk down memory lane! I am so glad to know it is still there!
The Buttercream Bakery was one of the first places we tried in Napa after purchasing our house in April. I loved the feel of stepping back in time when you walk in the door. And I’m sure it will be our number one choice for a hearty breakfast after a late night
i totally forgot to mention the most important part…
